Joseph Wanume (whom we call Junior) had a difficult beginning. At six months of age, Joseph’s mother threw him in a community pit latrine (a hole in the ground used as a toilet). A neighbor went to use the pit latrine and heard the baby crying. They called the police and the fire brigade broke open the concrete latrine with sledge hammers to get Joseph out..
His mother was arrested and released with a caution not to do it again. Joseph was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for head injuries as well as for infection. We were contacted by Probation Office and took Joseph who at the time had no name. We chose to name Joseph Wanume after the Hospital Administrator who worked very closely with us.
Joseph has come a along way in the last several months. He’s gone from not wanting to go to school at all to loving it. Auntie Jennifer (Robinson) has spent time personally helping Junior get a better grasp of numbers and letters. This has sparked him so much. There is a tremendous difference in his behavior at school and a noticeable difference in his interest in school lessons and Sunday School lessons. Joseph’s favorite is purple and he loves to eat samosas and dodo (greens). He likes to watch Tom and Jerry and his best friend is his brother Peter.
Although Joseph has had a hard beginning, we have faith that he will grow to be the man that God has called him to be. Remember Joseph in the bible was thrown into a pit too, but later in his life, rose to be second only unto Pharaoh. We believe this is the destiny for our Joseph. When you remember us here in Jinja, think of Joseph.
