Daphine Karikony Kirya

Daphine is a new addition to AFTC. Daphine is a transfer child from Welcome Home Ministries. Daphine’s mother is in prison for allegedly murdering 3 children of her “co-wife”. Daphine’s mother was the second wife. From talking to the prison warden, there is a good chance that Daphine’s mother may get the death penalty for her crimes. Daphine spent time living with her mother in prison before Welcome Home took over custody. Daphine has been with Welcome Home since July 12, 2004. Daphine is very shy and barely talks. She does not look you in the eye when she talks to you or even if you are talking to her. When she does talk you have to practically put your ear to her mouth to hear what she is saying. Two months before she was transferred to us she began attending school with our kids and spending afternoons with us. Since this has been her first time in school, we know that this will help draw her out. Recently we took all the children to Didi’s World which is a small amusement park for children, and we saw her come out of her shell like we’ve never seen before. She laughed and ran and talked and giggled. It was such a joy to see this little girl come a live. We’ve been a bit concerned but we also know that there is always a period of adjustment when transferred from one place to another.

We asked Daphine some questions and it took awhile but we got some answers. Daphine’s favorite color is yellow and her favorite food is chicken and chips. Daphine likes Angela very much and she loves little John because she knows him better. We will continue to love her and help her grow but we also encourage you to remember little Daphine. No one can know what she went through in those years of living in the prison with her mother but God knows and God can and will make a difference in her life.
